Pep Guardiola wants to purify the squad, 17 Man City players face the risk of leaving

Coach Pep Guardiola has just confirmed that he will have to shorten Man City's squad this summer, with at least 17 players who can break up with Etihad.

Pep wants to reduce the Man City squad in the summer of 2025

In the list of 27 players attending the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, Pep unexpectedly bricked three English players including Jack Grealish, Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips. This is considered a move for the “purification” of the unprecedented large force at Man City since the Spanish military leader took power.

“Currently we have a big squad – to more than 30 players,” Pep shared. “Next season, we cannot maintain such a crowded squad because there will be many players who do not play. Every step, some players will have to leave.”

Although Man City still has to fight in four major competitions including the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, Pep still thinks that maintaining too many players is unreasonable. This year, Man City has added 7 rookies, making the squad overloaded.

“I have no problem with the players, they behave very professionally. But if they don't play, they will be sad and disappointed – and I don't want that to happen,” Guardiola added. “I do this for them. No one wants 6–7 people to sit at home every week. Everything will be solved by steps in the remaining time of the transfer period.”

Greealish and Stones are those who are likely to leave very high

Among the names capable of leaving Etihad, James Mcatee (22 years old) will almost certainly leave after refusing to join the US tour to wear U21 UK to attend the European tournament.

Mateo Kovacic is injured and will take a few months to play, and John Stones is said to be able to return to Everton if Man City receives a reasonable offer. Most recently, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan was also thought to be able to leave Etihad when Galatasaray expressed his attention.

Recently, Stones spoke about the future: “I have not heard anything about the new contract, but I love Man City and want to stay. I am here to help the team.” However, the right to decide probably does not completely belong to him. The defender has just had a disaster season when he had to play 34 matches because of injury. He was also preparing to enter the last year of the contract and Man City naturally did not want to lose.
