Former striker Wayne Rooney spoke up about the number of rookies that Man United needed to add before the summer transfer window 2025 officially closed.
The Red Devils spent heavily to bring 4 rookies in the summer of 2025 including Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Diego Leon and Benjamin Sesko. Coach Ruben Amorim is still waiting for these new faces to create a necessary push, when the team only won 1 point after 2 opening matches of the 2025/26 season against Arsenal and Fulham.
Rooney, in the Podcast program on his BBC, said that the current force of Man United is still thin. When asked whether Amorim was the right person to lead MU forward, the former Red Devil captain shared: “It is difficult to assert. Actually, sit here and say 'true, 100%', I don't think anyone can do it, and even Ruben Amorim is hard to say, based on what we have seen since he comes to MU”.
“I think the recruitment work this summer is fine, but I still want to see 2 to 3 more players brought back. I want to see that. But it is difficult to confirm that he will be our coach in the next 4-5 years based on what is existing.”
The greatest striker Man United also spoke about the club's continued mistakes: “We all want to see him turn the situation, and maybe sometimes we judge a little bit because Man United is always the focus, while the season has only passed two matches.”
“But the worry is that we see what has been repeated from the previous season and that is the problem. I have hoped for those mistakes, the situation of the players who walked, competed fiercely and easily exploited by the opponent – was gone. But today, it is still a worry.”
In the near future, Man United will enter the second round of the League Cup against Grimsby, before encountering Burnley in the Premier League, before entering the vacation to make way for the first series of international matches of the season. The Red Devils hoped to complete a few more transfers before the market closed on September 1.
