Former US Open Caroline Wozniacki was engaged to Rory Mcilroy, but Northern Ireland golfer canceled the wedding just a phone call, then married Erica Stoll.
Mcilroy canceled the wedding ceremony with the Danish tennis star just a few days after the wedding card was sent. The couple had been with three years before Mcilroy ended the relationship with a quick call in 2014.
Earlier, this golfer proposed to Wozniacki on New Year's Eve in 2013. Both were considered as a powerful couple in the sports industry, when the success of Mcilroy in golf with Wozniacki, who later won the Australian Open and used to the US Open 2009, 2014. According to The Times, he ended the engagement with just a three -minute conversation, then explained the reason for the sudden change of mind.
“There is no right way to end a relationship that used to be very important to both,” Mcilroy said in May 2014, according to the Daily Mail. “The problem lies in me. The wedding card is sent to make me realize that I am not ready for marriage. I wish Caroline happiness and thank you for the great time. I won't say anything more about this relationship.”
Ahead of the US Open 2014 final with Serena Williams, Wozniacki shared the view: “I was shocked. I thought at least I had to talk directly, but no. Just a phone call, and I did not hear anything from him anymore,” she said on the program in Depth with Graham Bensinger. “The difficulty is that he's publicity from the beginning. He issued a press release, everything was exposed to my eyes.”
In 2015, Mcilroy started dating Erica Stoll, the PGA staff he knew from the 2012 Ryder Cup. They were engaged at the end of that year and held a wedding at Ashford Castle, County Mayo, 2017. The couple welcomed Poppy's daughter in 2020.
Looking back on the love affair with Wozniacki, Mcilroy explained why they couldn't go for a long time: “I used to think that in a person with similar position is a reasonable choice. But not so, because you never get rid of it. You cannot separate yourself to return to the real world,” he told Irish Independent in 2017.
Finally, the farewell brings happiness to both. Wozniacki has now married former NBA star David Lee since 2019 and has three children.
Last year, Mcilroy and Stoll filed for divorce, but in June 2024, they reunited. Mcilroy shared with The Guardian: “In the past few weeks, I and Erica realized that the best future is still a family together. Fortunately, we have resolved disagreements and towards a new start.”
This year, Mcilroy completed his Grand Slam career when he won the Masters in April.
On Friday, McIlroy hit -6 sticks at K Club, raising the total score to -7, standing in the third place, losing the leader Joakim Lagergren five sticks when there were two rounds in County Kilde.
Meanwhile, Wozniacki is likely to monitor the US Open final this weekend.
