Jake Paul – a YouTube star and professional boxer – caused a storm of media when suddenly leaving the interview with journalist Piers Morgan after a fierce controversy related to the legendary Mike Tyson.
The incident occurred in the program “Piers Morgan: Uncensored” broadcast on June 26, just a few days before Paul's match against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Everything became tense when Morgan asked a frank question: “Do you think you can beat a Mike Tyson at the peak?”. Piers Morgan also emphasized that Jake Paul has never defeated a true professional boxer, except for the match against Tommy Fury – the only person with serious boxing records that Paul once confronted.
Facing these statements, Jake Paul immediately got angry. He countered the fierce attitude and provocative words: “I don't care about your damn program,” and even called Morgan “idiot”. Not stopping, Paul also let go of the appearance of the host: “You are still a fat guy”.
Shortly thereafter, Jake Paul turned off the screen, leaving the interview that surprised Piers Morgan and the audience stunned. This action immediately became a hot topic on social networks and international news sites such as Bloody Elbow, TalkSport, New York Post and The Daily Beast.
Earlier, Jake Paul defeated Mike Tyson – who was 58 years old when he went to the floor – in a controversial match of fairness and expertise. Despite the victory, Paul was still criticized for taking advantage of his opponent's name and age to “polish” his boxing career.
This incident of leaving the interview was also viewed as part of Jake Paul's familiar communication strategy – creating controversy, attracting attention and promoting paid TV revenue (PPV) for his matches.
However, many people think that this action is counterproductive, causing Paul to be considered unprofessional and do not dare to face professional questions.
Jake Paul will be with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. On June 28 (local time). This is considered the first real test in his boxing career. If it fails, all communication tricks can become meaningless. And after the recent dramatic interview, the pressure on Jake Paul's shoulder was even bigger than ever.
